There are now more Americans receiving assistance from the federal government to eat than there are full time workers in the country.
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture estimates that the number of people participating in at least one of the 15 food assistance programs offered is now at 101 million, CNS News reported.
The total represents roughly a third of the U.S. population and cost taxpayers $114 billion in fiscal year 2012, according to the Agriculture Department.
Now that’s spreading the wealth around and it adds some perspective to what President Obama meant when he said to “Joe the Plumber” in an off-the-cuff comment on the campaign trail in 2008:

The numbers represent a record 47 million Americans receiving what is known as food stamps, 8.9 million more getting benefits from the Woman, Infants and Children program, 32 million students receiving low-cost or no-cost lunch and 10.6 million more participating in the School Breakfast Program.
